The 5th edition of Shanghai-Stuttgart-Symposium on Automotive and Powertrain Technology (5th SSS) was successfully held from 21st to 22nd October 2021 at Tongji University in Shanghai Jiading. The event was guided by Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and by the State Government of Baden-Württemberg, Germany and was hosted by School of Automotive Studies Tongji University and Institute of Automotive Engineering Stuttgart (IFS). The organizers of the event were the Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS), Nanjing Stuttgart Joint Exhibition Ltd. and the Shanghai AI NEV Innovative Platform Co. Ltd (ANIP).
As a platform originating in Sino-German academic exchange, the sessions of the symposium are chaired by the Dean of School of Automotive Studies Tongji University, Prof. Zhang Lijun and by Prof. Andreas Wagner, FKFS, Chairman of the Board of Management and University of Stuttgart, IFS, Chair of Automotive Engineering, with Co-chairs including Prof. Xiong Lu and Dr. Wu Xudong.

The two day program was organized into plenary sessions around the general theme of Global Challenges for Developing Future Vehicles and 4 thematic breakout sessions on the topics of Aerodynamics and Design, Technology of Intelligent Vehicles, Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cells as well as Powertrain and Electric Propulsion. There are altogether 52 brilliant speeches and a panel discussion.

The Aerodynamics and Lightweight Design session co-chaired by Prof. Jochen Wiedemann and Prof. Yang Zhigang from Stuttgart and Tongji Universities respectively, proved once more the highest academic and industry level with speakers coming from Nio, Volkswagen, Ford, GAC, Lamborghini, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Chery, Khalil Design and Werum as well as from the Universities of Stuttgart, Jilin, Wuhan, KIT, Fraunhofer Institute and FKFS.
Session A: Aerodynamics and Lightweight Design highlighting the successful online chairing delivered by Prof. Jochen Wiedemann introducing Dr. Maximilian Ludwig Ganis, Senior Manager Aerodynamics, Thermal and Energy Management NIO Industry Development.
The session Technology of Intelligent Vehicle was chaired by Prof. Andreas Wagner and Prof. Xiong Lu and had the privilege of welcoming contributions from speakers from companies including Audi AG, Webasto, Valeo, ZF, TWT and SBI, from the universities of Stuttgart, Tsinghua, Jiao Tong, Nanjing Southeast and Jilin, as well as the FKFS and FZI.
Session B: Technology of Intelligent Vehicles hosted by Prof. Andreas Wagner.
The session C centered on the topic Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Cell was extremely well attended by delegates, was co-chaired by Prof. Bargende and Prof. Zhang Cunman and hosted a number of high profile R&D and technical speakers from well-known companies such as Mahle, Liebher, Carl Zeiss, Bosch (China) Investment Ltd, Great Wall, CIKONI, Longi Hydrogen Tech Ltd. and Porsche. Also academia and research institutes were strongly represented through Shanghai Jiao Tong University, TU Berlin (with IAV), Wuhan University of Technology, National Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Center, Tongji and FKFS.

The session D about Powertrain and Electrical Propulsion, was co-chaired by Prof. Hans-Christian Reuss and Prof. Gao Bingzhao. The industry was represented by leading OEM, T1 and other high level suppliers including Geely, Zhejiang Founder Motor, BorgWarner, Infineon, Robert Bosch Trading Shanghai, Kistler, dSPACE, A2MAC1 Groupe, MicroNova, Yue Boo and SET. Furthermore Beijing Institute of Technology and Qingdao Automotive Research Institute, Jilin University also participated.
Session D: Powertrain and Electric Propulsion hosted by Prof. Gao Bingzhao.
This year the 5th SSS was held online and offline. The hosts can host the meeting online or on-site, the delegates can participate in the meeting online or on-site, and the speakers can also give a speech in a variety of ways such as through video submission, live, or onsite in Shanghai. A panel discussion with above mentioned panelists was also successfully carried out.
The 5th edition of Shanghai-Stuttgart-Symposium on Automotive and Powertrain Technology in total invited 72 speakers including keynotes and technical speakers with a total delegate visits of 1519 including 464 onsite and 1055 online.
Following the success of this 5th edition both School of Automotive Studies Tongji University and Institute of Automotive Engineering (IFS) University of Stuttgart look forward to hosting the 6th edition once more in Autumn 2022 with the exact dates to be decided.
